BBC have created an amazing documentary revealing the fascinating history St Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend watching it on BBC iPlayer
We visited the Hermitage last year, we only had one afternoon to take it all in, which really wasn’t enough! As both an art lover and interior designer, I wanted to appreciate everything about the Hermitage, but apparently it would take 9 years too see the full collection at the Hermitage if you were to spend 30 seconds looking at every piece of artwork!
My favourite room in the Winter Palace is the Alexander Hall, which is filled with a sense of tranquility and luxury. This hall is a fairly new addition to the Palace, it was built after the fire in 1837. The interior is a calm combination of the gothic and classic styles. It’s elegance shown through the pale blue colour and the crisp white decorative elements and details on the fan vaults. The hall is completed with the dropped chandeliers, highlighting the grand height of the domes.
